Studio Tips

  • Welcome to Yoga State! The location in downtown East Lansing opened first in 2006 as the areas first hot vinyasa studio. The Okemos location was the areas first hot vinyasa studio that also offered a Spinning studio, opening in 2011, then took a two and a half year “pandemic break” on March 30, 2021 until November 1, 2023 when it was reopened!

  • We are so happy you are interested in learning and practicing with YS! There is a lot of information on this website but if you have any questions or concerns please text or call Jen at 517-282-3922. If you are new to YS please take advantage of our 2 weeks unlimited for $20 introductory offer, it is available on you first visit as our encouraging gift to allow you to take a large variety of classes from many teachers at a really reasonable price so you can find your perfect fit! Use your packages at both studios for yoga and/or spinning classes.

  • Please remove your shoes at the door you walk in and leave them on the rug. We do not wear shoes down the hallway or through the studio. For Spinning please bring clean/dry shoes to ride in and put them on in the Spin room.

  • Sign in at the front desk. If you are a new student, please allow time to fill out your waiver/create an account if you haven’t done one on this website.

    • You can sign up ahead of time and complete the online waiver if it is your first visit to Yoga State on this web site, schedule page, on the top right is “my account” please “create a profile” or log in if you have one here. You will need to make a purchase in order to sign up for the class.

  • Refrain from eating 1 to 2 hours before practice. Come well hydrated. We highly recommend NOT drinking water during your yoga practice as it will put out your internal fire (and that is hard to relight), it also may increase nausea and it is a distraction.
You can bring water to Spinning.

  • For yoga class please bring your own mat and/or towel. We also sell mats.

    • if needed mats may be rented for $2. (we highly recommend purchasing your own mat).

    • Mats are available for purchase (we offer basic mats or Lululemon brand.

    • Water is available for $1.

    • Small hand towels are $1.

  • Please observe silence while in the inner yoga room. Refrain from talking or making loud movements as others are using the space for meditation or a longer Savasana following class. Please set up and close the door quietly.

  • Do not leave class while it is in session. We know how to keep you safe inside the room. It is against policy to leave to use the restroom or to go out into the hallway. The temperature change could lead to light headedness, dizziness or increase nausea. The teacher has been well trained to help you in the room and these feelings are natural as you are adjusting to an intense yoga practice both physically as well as mentally. If you need assistance stay on your mat and the teacher will come to help you, but do not leave the room once class has started. It is disruptive to all.

    • If you do not feel well or get overheated please sit on your mat and we will assist you.

    • Please use the restroom and be prepared by the start of class. Be well hydrated and mentally ready to learn and practice the parts of yoga beyond the physical shape. This will challenge you emotionally and mentally in a productive way but it will take your diligence and respect.

    • Since this is a class and Yoga State is a teaching studio please be willing to learn and explore possible new postures, transitions, mental challenges, and possible new ideas even if you have a prior yoga practice. Being willing to learn is a powerful attribute. We practice a balance between discipline and playfulness.

  • Let your teacher know about any injury or health problem that will affect your practice at the front desk before class.

  • Please do not bring cell phones into class. (unless necessary and inform the teacher at the front desk if you are “on call”.) If you must wear a Apple Watch or device please turn the brightness and vibration off. If possible leave this in the front room as well. Please leave your valuables in the front room at the East Lansing studio where they can be locked up during class. Things in the back cubby are not locked up during classes. In the Okemos studio there are cubbies and lockers in the back area near the restrooms.

  • If you are late please enter from our back door in East Lansing and come quietly to class. The front door will be locked at the start of class. Remember to check in after class if the front room was already locked. In the Okemos studio enter through the main entrance in front and be sure to sign in after since the front desk/merchandise room will be locked once classes start, but feel free to sneak in quietly to class.

  • The minimal age that is appropriate for these classes is 13 or over unless special arrangements are made with the owner or teacher. The guidance given and level of mental and physical challenge is intended for an adult level. The content of a class as well as the music played is geared to adults as well.

  • For Spinning class you must sign in on the iPad in the front room or check in if you already signed up and reserved a bike online before choosing your bike in the room.
